ISRO begins work on Chandrayaan-II project

Chennai, Jan 17 (PTI) ISRO has begun working on the Rs 425-crore second unmanned moon mission to be launched by early 2012 following the success of Chandrayaan-I, a top ISRO official said here on Saturday.
Chandrayaan-II will focus on soil and mineral exploration on the lunar surface with the help of a robotic device and send back data, Chandrayaan Project Director Mayilsamy Annadurai told reporters here.
The work had begun on the project and it was likely to be launched by end of 2011 or early 2012, he said. ISRO plans to send a manned flight to space in 2015 and the manned mission to the moon in 2020, he added.
About Chandrayaan-I, he said it has beamed 40,000 pictures since its launch.
The stakeholders of the project would meet soon to discuss the information beamed by India's successful lunar mission, Annadurai said.

印宇航局发言人介绍称,“月船2号”探测器的主要任务是对月球表面的化学成份进行研究。为此,“月船2号”探测任务实际上将由两部探测器组成——一部为轨道探测器,另一部为自动月球车。按照计划,月球车将在月表实现软着陆并采集土壤样本进行分析。月球车获取的分析数据将经由轨道探测器传回地球控制中心。

“月船2号”探测任务将由印度宇航局与俄罗斯航天局联合实施。此前有消息称,“月船2号”任务中使用的月球车将完全由俄方企业制造。专家们指出,这部月球车将通过太阳能获取能量供应,其在月球表面的工作时间将持续约1年左右。

“月船1号”探测器于2008年10月22日顺利发射升空。其一项主要任务是搜集月球表面的矿物和化学成份数据。该探测器在进入月球轨道后,于11月14日成功向月表投放了一个撞击探测器。该撞击探测器是“月船1号”所携11件载荷之一。撞击探测器除装备一套摄像系统以外,还携有一台雷达高度计和一台质谱仪,分别用于测量探测器落向月表的速度和探测月球上空极为稀薄的大气。

They're busy at work on the engineering aspect of Chandrayaan-II, which has begun and is scheduled to be launched by 2012, according to Mayilsamy Annadurai, Project Director Chandrayaan-1. “The total cost of the project is Rs. 425 crore,” he told journalists after calling on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at his residence here. He said though the lander-cum- rover was an Indo-Russian joint venture, Russia would share the major responsibility for the lander-cum-rover.

“The orbiter will be ours,” he added. The launcher will be GSLV Mark III. The Indian Space Research Organisation reports that the GSLV Mark III, is its heaviest, tallest and most powerful rocket yet. The 42.4-meter-tall rocket will have a lift-off weight of 630 tons and can put a four-ton satellite into the geo-synchronous transfer orbit (GTO) or a 10-ton satellite into a low-earth orbit. The Chandrayaan-II will have an orbiter (spacecraft) besides a lander-cum-rover. After the spacecraft reaches the lunar orbit, the lander-cum-rover will release from it and soft-land on the Moon by means of a powered descent. Mr. Annadurai said the entire orbiter would weigh 2,700 kg. Asked about his meeting with Mr. Karunanidhi, he said, it was a courtesy call. “I thanked him for his congratulatory messages,” he said.

AHMEDABAD: With Chandrayaan-1 already having entered the lunar orbit, get ready for Chandrayan-2. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning its second Moon Mission, Chandrayaan-2, in 2011 in a joint venture with Russia. Chandrayaan-2 will consist of a spacecraft and a landing platform with a moon rover.

And, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DAIICT) is abuzz with experiments for this second unmanned mission to the Moon.

Unlike Chandrayaan-1 which will orbit the Moon at an altitude of 100 km mapping topography and the mineralogical content of the lunar soil, Chandrayaan-2 mission involves a lunar orbiting spacecraft, a lander and a rover on the Moon's surface.

The rover will move on wheels on the lunar surface, pick up samples of soil or rocks, conduct a chemical analysis and send the data to the spacecraft orbiting above.

DAIICT is hard at work, developing a small device weighing around 200 gm based on sensor technology. This device will work on wireless network system to explore the presence of water on Moon's polar regions through close quarters.

Prabhat Ranjan, faculty at DAIICT, says, "We have submitted our proposal to PRL. We are planning to land 30 to 40 small devices which will collect moon samples from the polar regions and pass on the data to cluster heads and then die out. It is still in a very nascent stage."

"The cluster heads will sustain for a longer period and will transmit the collected data to the lunar rover or lander on the Moon surface," Ranjan adds.

On the number of scientific payloads on Chandrayaan-2, J N Goswami, director, Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) and mission director, Chandrayaan-1 says, "We have yet not finalized the scientific experiments for Chandrayaan-2. We have invited proposal from various institutes and organizations, but everything is still at a conceptual level."

"The response for submitting proposals has been great so far. The final experiments for the mission will only be decided through detailed scientific discussions," Goswami adds.

Bangalore: Chandrayaan II will be launched on a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) as opposed to the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle used to launch Chandrayaan I, Madhavan Nair, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), said here on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the International Customs Day celebrations organised by the Bangalore Customs Commissionerate, Mr. Nair outlines the immediate plans of ISRO. “An ocean satellite, which is in the offing, would be launched by March or April. The satellite will be used to detect surface temperature and extra sensors to map the colour of the ocean have also been added to the satellite,” he said.

Vellore (PTI): Encouraged by the successful launch of Chandrayaan-I, ISRO scientists had started work on Chandrayaan-II, which was expected to be ready by 2011-12, a top scientist said on Saturday.

The cost, estimated at Rs 450 crore, was, however, likely to go up further by the time of the launch, Chandrayaan-I executive director M Annadurai said here.

Delivering the keynote address at the convocation of the Marudhur Kesari Jain college here, he said that the youth could achieve expertise in their chosen fields and come out with successful inventions if they worked hard.

"We have 40 lakh youth in the country. If all of them, put together, work tirelessly, India will be a force to reckon with by 2020, as former President A P J Abdul Kalam has already predicted," he said.

Annadurai pointed to the example of ISRO engineers and scientists, who he said, had after years of hard work and some failures, successfully launched satellites.

District Collector Rajendran, who was present, handed out degree certificates to 229 candidates of the college.

Sriharikota: The Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) is planning to send two humans to orbit in the next seven years. ISRO has submitted a Rs 12,400 crore ($ 2.5 billion) project report to the government for its approval. Meanwhile, 2009 is going to be the year of “fireworks” for ISRO, which scheduled four more launches in 2009 and Chandrayaan II launch in 2011-12.

G Madhavan Nair, chairman, ISRO said that government has approved pre project report Rs 90 crore for Human Space Mission. Now, a detail project report was submitted to the government for approval. He noted, the planning commission already approved the Rs 12,400 crore ($ 2.5 billion) mission.

The money will be spent for training Astronauts, setting up a launch pad, handling the crew, mission control system, technologies and hardware.

“We will be sending two humans for the orbit, 270 kms away from the Earth, in seven years”.

He also said 2009 is going to be the year of fireworks for ISRO and it would continue. "We will be launching Oceansat II, Gsat IV and Resourcesat and others. Indigenously developed cryogenic engine will be inducted this year." ISRO has scheduled four launches starting from June this year.

While giving update on Chandrayaan, which was launched end of 2008, he said it is doing well and sending pictures for the past six months. “Chandrayaan II launch plan is going on in full swing and it will be a soft launch,” said Nair.

The rocket will carry one or two small vehicles and will land it in the moon. These machines will do analysis of the samples and will send back the data. Currently Chandrayaan sends only picture but doesn’t do any analyse on the resources.

Chandrayaan II will be launched in 2011 end or 2012 beginning with Russian collobration, said Nair.

Indian brains at NASA want to move to ISRO


TIRUCHI: Scientists of Indian origin at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have evinced interest in moving to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) after the Chandrayaan – 1 success, Mylswamy Annadurai, Project Director, Chandrayaan 1 & 2, said here.

“Scientists have begun to approach the ISRO. Their requests will be considered on a case to case basis in keeping with our requirements.”

It will be done without disturbing the equilibrium of motivation among the ISRO scientists, Mr. Annadurai said.

He was hopeful of accomplishing the Rs. 425-crore Chandrayaan – 2 project by 2012. The satellite with a payload of 2,700 kg to be launched using Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle will be engineered to send two rovers on moon surface for a duration between six months to one year for carrying out chemical analysis of samples through laser induced heating.

As of now, 150 scientists and engineers, including Russians, are working on the project. A parallel process is on for accomplishing manned mission to Moon by 2015, Mr. Annadurai said.

On its part, the ISRO was contributing to avoid possibilities for space debris by cataloguing the locations of the existing satellites prior to making launches, propelling geostationary satellites above the orbit before the end of its utility period, and increasing the lifespan of the satellites, he said, responding to another question.

Plans for Mars mission in a year  

KOLKATA: The biggest impediment to the launch of Chandrayaan-2 is ensuring a soft landing for the rover on the moon, which is a crucial part of the mission, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman G. Madhavan Nair said here on Saturday.

Speaking to journalists after receiving the M.P. Birla Memorial Award, Mr. Nair explained that since the moon’s gravitation was less than that of the earth, the ISRO would have to build technology for managing the impact of the landing. “We will be able to land the rover on the moon by 2013,” he said.

Mr. Nair delivered a lecture on “Indian scientific explorations in space” at the event in which he listed the achievements of the ISRO. He said Chandrayaan-1, India’s first mission to the moon launched in October 2008, was perhaps the most important accomplishment of the organisation.

Future projects

He spoke about future projects, including India’s Mars mission, asteroid explorations and Aditya-1, India’s first space-based solar coronagraph.

On climate change, Mr. Nair said that while the primary responsibility was with the India Meteorological Department, the ISRO was planning to launch a geo-stationary satellite in two to three years to specifically map changing monsoon patterns and cloud shifts.

Asked about India’s human space programme, he said: “Our priority today is national development programmes, but we may be able to have a manned mission on an orbit around the earth by 2015.”

As far as a Mars mission was concerned, the organisation would finalise plans within a year, as they were on the lookout for good scientific plans.

He said the ISRO revenue was expected to increase by 25 per cent in the coming year because of increased usage of satellite services by telecom and Direct to Home (DTH) television operators. The organisation was also expecting earnings from launching satellites for other countries through the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

Mr. Nair was appreciative of the efforts of the M.P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research in attracting young people towards the pure sciences. There was a need for young students to take up pure sciences and conduct research, he said adding that he hoped the ISRO’s ambitious plans would draw young minds towards space research.

The Chandrayaan II mission, slated to be launched in 2011-12, is facing an impediment in landing the “rover” on the surface of the moon. The chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Gopalan Madhavan Nair, said they were trying to develop technologies to help override the concern.

Nair was in the city to receive the MP Birla Memorial Award 2009 for exceptional achievement in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics, space science and allied disciplines from the MP Birla Institute of Fundamental Research and MP Birla Planetarium.

Ensuring the safe landing of the rover on the surface of the moon is an obstacle at present in case of Chandrayaan II. The moon does not have an atmosphere and utilising parachutes is not possible. So we are exploring other alternatives. The project should take off by 2013,” said Nair.

He claimed even the Mars mission could suffer a modest setback due to the paucity of qualified manpower and enough scientific ideas.

Nair said that ISRO would also launch a geostationary satellite to cater to the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) weather monitoring system. “The satellite will help in reading cloud shifts and changing monsoon patterns. We will hand it over to IMD after its launch. We expect this project to be ready in another two to three years,” the ISRO chief said.

The organisation is looking at increasing the revenue from carrying spacecraft from other countries after the successful launch of PSLVs. Almost 15-20 per cent of ISRO’s revenue comes from carrying spacecraft from other countries. The nodal space research organisation of India is already in talks with US for launching their satellites.

India mulls using nuclear energy to power Chandrayan II: ISRO

MUMBAI: India plans to power some parts of the Chandrayaan II--its next unmanned mission to the moon- with nuclear energy and the feasibility  studies are being carried out by Indian Space Research Organisation and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

"We are thinking of powering some parts of Chandrayaan II with nuclear power and it will power the spacecraft when it revolves aroung the dark side of the moon," Madhavan Nair, Chairman, ISRO, told media here today before accepting the degree of Doctorate of Science conferred on him at the 47th Convoction of IIT-Mumbai.

He said both ISRO and BARC are carrying out the feasibility studies on this, which will be useful for carrying out further experiments to use N-power for Chandrayaan II, he said.

Asked how safe it is to use nuclear power in the mission, he said "the safety aspects are being worked and safety is crucial when it is launched from ground level to the orbit."

"To work out the safety, we have to work on new technologies and the feasibility studies will help in developing those," Nair said.

On using N-power in the deep space probe, he said "we need nuclear power in those missions which are outside out solar systems but the challenges are very many."

Asked whether laws relating to use of space will allow use of N-power, he said "we have to take utmost care in launching from to ground to the orbit and this aspect we will work out in future."
