稳定翼在再入时竖起可以增加再入的阻力,而且据说这种构型在再入时能更好的保持姿态,更安全。当然它的再入和真正的轨道再入是有本质区别的。

美国航天飞机早期方案里有可伸缩翼的,应该主要是为了避免再入时翼前缘非常强烈的气动加热吧。

This very first captive carry was a huge success and both the mothership and spaceship looked absolutely stunning against the blue back drop of the Mojave skies.

Commenting on the historic flight, Burt Rutan said: “This is a momentous day for the Scaled and Virgin Teams. The captive carry flight signifies the start of what we believe will be extremely exciting and successful spaceship flight test program.”

Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Galactic added: “Seeing the finished spaceship in December was a major day for us but watching VSS Enterprise fly for the first time really brings home what beautiful, ground-breaking vehicles Burt and his team have developed for us. It comes as no surprise that the flight went so well; the Scaled team is uniquely qualified to bring this important and incredible dream to reality. Today was another major step along that road and a testament to US engineering and innovation.”

The VSS Enterprise test flight programme will continue though 2010 and 2011, progressing from captive carry to independent glide and then powered flight, prior to the start of commercial operations.

大陆游客暂无缘20万美元太空游

    记者昨日从维珍银河英国总部以及部分代理机构了解到,我国台湾、香港已各有五六名游客报名预订太空游行程,并交付了订金。但碍于相关政策限制,中国大陆游客暂不能报名。

“企业号”一次载客6名

    维珍宇宙飞船“企业号”在2009年12月7日首次公诸于世,今年3月底“企业号”被绑上母船——“白衣骑士2号”,上升到了45000英尺(相当于13.716公里)的高空,整个过程持续了2小时54分钟。而按照维珍银河的设想,母船携带“企业号”爬升到离地约5万英尺(相当于16公里)后,会将“企业号”抛下,由后者自带的火箭助推器点火,在90秒内以3倍音速高速飞行至离地36万英尺(相当于110公里)的高度。

    维珍宇宙飞船“企业号”除了可携带2名机长外,还专门为乘客准备了6个座位。每名乘客都将拥有两个大大的窗户,一个在旁边,一个在头顶,供其欣赏壮观的太空景象。而到达距地110公里以上的太空亚轨道上之后,乘客还可有4-6分钟时间,解开安全带,在舱内四处“飘荡”,尽情体验无重力状态,并从深邃的宇宙中观看四周美丽的星球,而展现在“太空人”面前的地球,将呈现出直径达上千英里、云雾缭绕、色彩缤纷的巨大弧面。

台湾、香港均有报名者

    昨日记者在维珍银河官网上看到,维珍银河在亚洲仅有4个授权报名的代理点,分别为印度、韩国、日本和中国香港。记者与其在香港的代理点——美丽华旅行社取得联系。该旅行社负责太空游项目报名的陈颖文女士告诉记者,香港市民对太空游非常感兴趣,目前已有五六个客人确定报名并缴纳了订金。另外,目前台湾已有3对夫妇报名。

大陆游客暂不能报名

    陈颖文透露,该项目目前主要接受香港市民的报名,大陆游客不在受理范围内,“这是维珍银河总部的要求,具体原因并不清楚”。记者联系到维珍银河英国伦敦总部,其客户总监斯蒂芬·埃特博罗表示,维珍太空游飞船发射基地设在美国,据美国的相关规定,中国大陆公民未被允许参加维珍银河此项在美境内发射的“太空游”项目。

Results:

All objectives achieved. SS2 was pressurized and powered from the mothership in flight. Peak altitude was 51,000 ft which allowed for a long cold-soak to evaluate the robustness of the hardware. A simulated Spaceship decent/glide mission was made from altitude to high key. Several approaches followed for pilot training/proficiency.

  据国外媒体报道,这就是诺曼·福斯特在新墨西哥州的沙漠为“维珍银河”修建的终端大楼:它看上去就像是把游客送到大气边缘的未来派飞机,它即将从技术图纸变为现实。



  参与者取得“宇航员”资格

  对于位于美国加州莫哈韦沙漠里的这个太空港,你首先注意到的是在沙漠艳阳之下停泊在这里的商务航班的数量之多。这里的气候意味着它是飞机制造商存放那些业主尚未完全付费的飞机的最佳场所。如果说这一“飞机墓地”的奇观还不够惊人的话,向西5英里(8公里)是特哈查比口风力发电厂,它是全球最大的风力发电厂,拥有5000多个风力涡轮机。

  这里有着奇怪的地貌,似乎启发了很多企业家,经营这些企业的绝对是一些有着奇思妙想的人,其中一家企业的名字叫“飞船公司(the Spaceship Company)”,在飞机的车间,飞船正在建造当中。

  如果你脑海中出现的是简笔画的登月舱或者冯·布劳恩的火箭,那就再想一想:这艘飞船是用碳纤维制成,也采用了可回收利用的尼龙和笑气,它可以转变成一个“羽毛球”,鼓翅而下,飞回地球。它不像发射航天飞机那样,需要事先安置在发射台等待发射,而是从有史以来最大的碳纤维合成材料建造的母机上发射。飞船和母机都由同一家公司设计,该公司的创办者住在沙漠中心一个半埋于地下的金字塔中,金字塔内部用外星人和古埃及人进行接触这个主题的壁画装饰。这就是这个承诺将成为把游客送到太空的首家企业的令人惊异的背景。

飞行系统不用电脑控制
  要实现这一目标,“维珍银河” 需要一个飞船和母机的小型机队,母机把飞船带到5万英尺(15.2公里)的高度才可发射。“维珍银河”和莫哈韦沙漠航空宇宙公司“缩尺复合体”的联合公司“飞船公司”要建造3艘发射母机和5艘飞船,“维珍银河”希望从2012年把付费的“参与者”送入亚轨道太空,它的目标是每天3次太空飞行,现在他们正在为之努力。
  全面试飞计划已经开始,试飞员的第一项工作是确保飞船和母机连在一起后能安全有效地飞行。这些飞行也叫“带飞”,因为较小的“太空船二号”将悬挂在“白色骑士二号”母机上。现在,带飞正在莫哈维太空港进行。
  “白色骑士二号”的双舱大小相同,形状如同“太空船二号”飞船的管状机身,舱内的样子基本相同,均可容纳6人,母舰和飞船的控制系统也是一样的。因此在飞行员每次飞行母机的时候,他也在体验飞船的控制。不同于现代飞机,机上任何飞行系统都不用电脑控制:虽然机上也有电脑,但是它们只用于监控和获取信息。母机和飞船的操控均使用传统的操纵杆和方向舵的机械航空系统。怀特霍恩说:“飞行员的感觉就像驾驶赛斯纳飞机升入太空。”
  即使改变“太空船二号”机翼角度的机械装置也是手动操作,使用一根杆操纵一个液压系统。改变机翼角度是为了让飞船在垂直飞回地球大气的时候变为羽毛球形状,这是为了确保使用的所有系统简单而安全。这一想法同样用于火箭推进系统。“阿波罗”号将宇航员送往月球时使用的燃料由液氮和以煤油为基础的飞行燃料混合而成,极易燃烧;宇航员坐在一个摩天大楼那样大的“炸弹”上方,显然用来携带乘客的系统并不适合,因此,新技术要求寻找能让“太空船二号”的最大时速达3500英里(5633公里)的发动机。
  研制工作严格保密
  “太空船二号”配有一个插入式火箭加速器,在飞船降落后拆除火箭加速器,然后插入新的燃料拴驱动下一轮飞行。选中的燃料不含高爆成份,事实上,它起听来就像湿沙拉的爆炸声。“太空船二号”将由两种固体燃料的一种——橡胶或者可以回收利用的尼龙驱动。
  怀特霍恩说:“氧化物(与燃料结合产生推力)是一氧化二氮(笑气)。与其它固体燃料发动机不同,这种发动机可通过切断一氧化二氮来关闭。因此,它非常可靠,而且非常非常安全。”
  而且这种喷气推进系统让“维珍银河”充满了神秘感,外人很少看到驾驶员座舱或内舱的照片,因为这种系统依靠的是火箭技术,所以,依照美国法律,整个工程像研制先进武器一样视列为机密。怀特霍恩解释说:“每张照片在公布之前一定要进行审查。在商业运作之前我们不允许公布任何关于内舱状况的照片。”这一“维珍银河”工程对“缩尺复合体”公司专家的要求之严远远超过了他们之前所做工作。这样的太空飞行除了对飞船提出特殊要求外,“白色骑士二号”的建造还将合成飞行器设计提升到了一个新高度。
  这一双体船必定非常坚固才行。为了确保没有接口,不会造成潜在的缺陷,“缩尺复合体”公司必须建成怀特霍恩所说的“史上最大的单片合成物”。单片支柱意味着“白色骑士二号”是“人类历史上最坚固的飞行器”,怀特霍恩说:“机翼中部的强度非常大,它可让该飞行器将17吨的重物带到50000英尺(15.2公里)的高空。”
  在投下飞船后,“白色骑士二号”变成一个零重力的飞行机器(宇航员训练飞行器),次日将飞入太空的左舱的人可在这一母机中进行最后的训练。“白色骑士二号”的一只机翼将直立向上,另一只机翼朝向地面,开启一侧舱门,然后转圈飞行,成为一个飞行的离心分离机,可产生7倍重力的力。
  如果你想知道这类革命性创意来自哪里,你需要从莫哈韦沙漠机场驱车10分钟,就会看到一座像六边金字塔一半掩埋在地下的房子从沙漠露出头来,其中一面地下墙上的挂毯显示外星人帮助古埃及人建造金字塔。“维珍银河”企业的故事就是在这所房子里开始。
  这是巴特·鲁坦的房子,他是一位航空开拓者,是“航行家”飞机的设计师,1986年他驾驶“航行家”飞机依靠一箱燃料完成全球飞行。鲁坦是“缩尺复合体”公司的老板,他完成了一些航空方面最巧妙的设计。虽然他曾告诉记者他相信外星人曾帮助建造金字塔,但是,在设计方面的“一根筋”作风让他的公司在很多大航空公司没有认识到的一些领域大步前行,比如民间太空旅行。

  从一个国家飞到另一个国家?
  鲁坦与布兰森的首次合作是“维珍大西洋环球飞行者”——鲁坦的“航行者”飞机的改进版。怀特霍恩说:“我们刚刚投资铁路产业,对于铁路业,你可以走出去告诉那些公司你要什么,他们根据规格为你建造列车,但是在航空业,你必须接受给予你的一切。因此,理查德对那些合成材料非常感兴趣,这时,史蒂夫·佛塞特建议建议建造一个三日内环游全球的燃油燃烧效率高的高空喷气机。”
  佛塞特驾驶了这架飞机,并打破了环球飞行记录,“维珍大西洋”则能学到了碳合成建造技术。一天,为了改进鲁坦的“环球飞行者”的技术,怀特霍恩拜访了“缩尺复合体”公司,他看到了“太空船一号”。他回忆说:“我在工厂中看到它,我给理查德打电话说:‘你认为‘环球飞行者’令人兴奋,可他正在建造飞船!’”
  维珍开始与保罗·艾伦进行商谈,达成协议,维珍公司买下这项正在为X奖开发的技术的版权。 后来,维珍公司和“缩尺复合体”公司联合成立了“飞船公司”。
  维珍集团的董事坚持让怀特霍恩和布兰森证明太空旅行存在一个可行市场。他们给怀特霍恩制定了一个挑战性的目标:得到1000万美元的押付定金后才能获得资助。怀特霍恩说:“大约7、8个月内,我们得到了1000万美元。而且最令人兴奋的事情是通过那些预付定金的人我们了解到他们渴望体验失重状态。因为没有空间允许我们重建‘太空船一号’,所以我们开始设计‘太空船二号’和‘白色骑士二号’。”
  维珍正准备制定每天进行三次太空之旅的时间表。飞行只允许在新墨西哥州太空港上方的一小块方形领空进行,“太空船二号”通过太空到达另外一个国家是不合法的。谈到在苏格兰修建维珍银河太空港的问题,怀特霍恩表示,条件尚未成熟,可能不会有太大的成果。他说:“它不是空中楼阁,我们是否能被允许到达另外一个国家,要看美国政府。只要我们能安全飞行太空数千次,而且降低费用的话,未来的发展可能更快。谁知道它能把我们带到哪里?”

Monday was a great milestone for the team. We performed five tests from 25 to 60 mph with two different pilots. All objectives were achieved. They were: condition the brakes and evaluate the landing gear/brake steering/skid shoe performance and general ground handling. The vehicle performed as expected and we're excited to move into the manned phase of the test program.

A private suborbital spaceship built for the space tourism firm Virgin Galactic made its first flight with a crew onboard Thursday as it soared over California's Mojave Desert beneath its enormous mothership.

The commercial spaceliner – called VSS Enterprise, one of the company's fleet of SpaceShipTwo spacecraft – did not try to reach space in the test flight. Instead, it stayed firmly attached to its WhiteKnightTwo VMS Eve mothership.

The two crewmembers riding onboard VSS Enterprise evaluated all of the spacecraft's systems and functions during the 6-hour, 12-minute flight, Virgin Galactic officials said in a statement. In addition, automated sensors and ground crews conducted thorough vehicle systems tests.

"Objectives achieved," Virgin Galactic officials said in a statement on the company's website. "Congratulations to the whole team!"

Three other crewmembers flew aboard the Eve mothership, which is designed to carry SpaceShipTwo to an altitude above 50,000 feet (15,240 meters) before the spacecraft drops and fires its hybrid rocket motor to launch into suborbital space.

Virgin Galactic was founded by British billionaire Sir Richard Branson. The SpaceShipTwo spacecraft and their WhiteKnightTwo motherships are built for Virgin Galactic by Mojave, Calif.-based Scaled Composites, which was founded by veteran aerospace designer Burt Rutan.

SpaceShipTwo is built to carry eight people (six passengers and two pilots) on suborbital flights that would reach outer space for a few minutes, though would not go high enough to enter Earth orbit.

The flights will provide a weightless experience and a view of the blackness of space and glowing Earth below. Tickets cost $200,000 per person.

Rutan and Scaled Composites also built SpaceShipTwo's predecessor, the smaller suborbital craft SpaceShipOne financed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, which won the $10 million Ansari X Prize for reusable, manned suborbital spacecraft in 2004.

Thursday's captive flight test was the 33rd voyage of the mothership VMS Eve, one of company's the WhiteKnightTwo craft. It was the third captive-carry flight for VSS Enterprise. The first of these joint flights occurred earlier this year in March.

The mothership crew consisted of Mark Stucky, Peter Kalogiannis and Brian Maisler, while Peter Siebold and Michael Alsbury rode aboard VSS Enterprise.

The VSS Enterprise is the first in a planned fleet of suborbital SpaceShipTwo spacecraft for Virgin Galactic. While the first test flights are being flown from Mojave, Calif., Virgin Galactic is building a terminal for space tourism flights at Spaceport America in New Mexico as well.

The VSS Enterprise named after the fictional starship of the same name from the science fiction television franchise "Star Trek."

LOS ANGELES — Virgin Galactic's space tourism rocket SpaceShipTwo may fly free in its first glide test later this year, a company official said Friday.

The six-passenger spaceship has been carried aloft three times attached to the wing of its special jet-powered mothership, including a July 15 flight with two pilots aboard for the first time.

That flight, conducted by spaceship-builder Scaled Composites LLC over California's Mojave Desert, allowed the crew to evaluate all systems and functions in the air, said Stephen Attenborough, an executive with Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic in London.

"Scaled are now evaluating the data from this recent captive-carry flight before we know when the first SS2 independent glide flight will be but there's a reasonable possibility that we could see it happen in the Fall," Attenborough said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Virgin Galactic also released the first photographs of SpaceShipTwo with its wings and tail structures in the "feathered" position, a unique and critically important element of the system created by legendary aviation designer Burt Rutan.

SpaceShipTwo will be carried by the mothership to an altitude of up to 50,000 feet, then released before its rocket engine ignites for a high-speed ascent into space, where passengers will experience a few minutes of weightlessness.

The spaceship's twin tails and portions of the wings will then rotate about 65 degrees upward to create high drag, slowing re-entry into the atmosphere and preventing a buildup of heat on the ship's skin.

At an altitude of about 70,000 feet, the tails will rotate back down to a conventional aircraft configuration for the glide back to a runway landing.

The photographs were taken as SpaceShipTwo was being prepared for its third captive-carry flight.

"Nobody's ever seen SpaceShipTwo with the wings feathered before," Attenborough said in a brief phone interview. "It's another sign of progress and quite an interesting view of the spaceship."

The mothership, a four-engine jet dubbed WhiteKnightTwo, carries the spaceship on the center of its wing between two fuselages.

The aircraft has made 33 flights and its testing is "substantially complete," Attenborough said.

Attenborough said that although both companies were pleased with the flight tests, "no corners will be cut in order to achieve arbitrary deadlines."

Virgin Galactic has said the test program is expected to run through next year before commercial operations begin. Some 300 clients have paid for a $200,000 ticket or placed a deposit, according to the company.

The left rear landing gear on Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnight Two failed during a test flight in the Mojave desert 19 Aug.

The quad-engine jet that will be the mothership carrying Virgin's passenger spaceship was on its 37th test flight. The spaceship was not attached at the time of the incident. No one was injured.

The gear failure was a "very, very minor incident" says Virgin Galactic, and will have "no impact on the project at all."

Virgin has said the test programme is expected to run through most of 2011 before commercial operations begin. More than 300 would-be astronauts have paid for or put down a deposit for a $200,000 ticket with Sir Richard Branson's space tourism venture.

The Virgin Galactic WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) mothership was damaged Aug. 19 when its left main landing gear collapsed on the runway at Mojave, Calif.

Fortunately for the test effort, the Scaled Composites-designed SpaceShipTwo (SS2) was not suspended beneath the WK2 at the time. Scaled says WK2 was on its 37th test flight when the gear collapsed, though no information has yet been released about whether the aircraft had already flown, or was about to take off, when the incident occurred.

The Mojave-based company says in a statement that “a minor incident occurred on the runway at Mojave airport this morning, which involved a mechanical problem with the left hand-side landing gear of WhiteKnightTwo. No injuries were sustained.”

No information has yet come to light about the extent of the damage to WK2, though the incident will undoubtedly cause some delay to the test program, which appeared to be building up rapidly towards the first glide test flights of the eight-seater sub-orbital SS2.

As recently as July 15, the WK2 and SS2 completed the first manned captive-carry mission. The 6-hr., 12-min., flight was the third captive-carry test of the vehicle with Pete Siebold and Mike Alsbury crewing the spaceship. The flight included a full simulated SS2 mission from release down to low approach.

As well as performing its main role as the airborne launch platform for the SS2, WK2 is also key to training the spacecraft crews, as well as focusing on systems qualification and maturity. The unusually configured, twin-boom WK2 shares many common features with the SS2 including the cabin, environmental control system, speed-brake actuators, avionics, trim servos, air data, test data, video and telemetry system.

Recent accomplishments that cleared the way for the start of the manned flights of SS2 included the first taxi test of the spaceship at Mojave in mid-June. The runs included five tests from 25 to 60 mph with two different pilots. Scaled says all objectives were achieved during the test, which included conditioning the brakes and evaluating the landing gear, brake steering and skid shoe performance, along with general ground handling.

SpaceShipTwo To Resume Captive Carry Flights

LOS ANGELES — Scaled Composites is poised to resume captive carry flight tests of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo (SS2) with the return to flight of the WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) launch aircraft. WK2 was damaged Aug. 19 in a landing gear failure.

The unconventional four-engine mothership resumed flight tests at Mojave, Calif., on Sept. 13 following repairs to the left vertical tail and modifications to the main landing gear. The undercarriage was beefed up with what senior Scaled management describes as a minor modification, plus an additional fail-safe redundancy.

The functional check flight evaluated performance with the gear fixed down, as well as a simulated SS2 glide mission and approach. The flight, which included two touch-and-go approaches, involved pilot proficiency work and evaluations of engine pylons, rudder repairs, lateral stability and environmental-control systems.

Scaled says the Aug. 19 gear failure occurred while the crew was performing touch-and-go maneuvers (Aerospace DAILY, Aug. 23). “Upon the fifth nominal touchdown, the left-hand main gear partially retracted. Flight-test engineer Marc Zeitlin immediately annunciated the anomaly and pilot Pete Siebold called for an abort while holding centerline. Meanwhile, co-pilot Clint Nichols secured the engines and systems.”

A subsequent test flight, also made with the gear fixed down, was recently completed with no further issues, the company says.

Envelope expansion work with the space vehicle attached will still be possible with the gear deployed due to the relatively high-power capability of the WK2’s four Pratt & Whitney Canada PW308A engines.

Virgin Galactic slows satellite launcher plans

Virgin Galactic's satellite launching rocket LauncherOne that once attracted $110m in investment is now in doubt.

LauncherOne's manager has departed and the space tourism company's chief executive is talking only about future possibilities for the rocket.

The rocket would take satellites weighing up to 200kg (440lbs) into low-Earth orbit for $1-2m.

LauncherOne was to be air-launched from Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo aircraft.

This is the same plane that will also launch Sir Richard Branson's tourist carrying SpaceShipTwo spacecraft.

In July 2009, Abu Dhabi-based Aabar Investment offered Virgin Galactic $110m for LauncherOne development, if further studies proved the business case.

Later that year, Sir Richard's Galactic team took on Adam Baker to be its general manager for small satellite launch and to conduct those studies.

Dr Baker had previously worked for Surrey Satellite Technology Limited, the British small spacecraft manufacturer.

The Guildford-based company had been looking to find cheaper and more timely access to space for its clients and had spoken to Virgin Galactic about working on the LauncherOne project in 2008 and early 2009.

But SSTL backed out after attempts to raise some feasibility funding from the then British National Space Centre (now the UK Space Agency) did not succeed.

Soon after Dr Baker's employment started at Galactic, the company's President Will Whitehorn told an October 2009 conference that LauncherOne could start operating a year after the sub-orbital tourism business was up and running.

However, Dr Baker left Virgin Galactic last month and there is no clear explanation from the company as to why the project is not set to follow Mr Whitehorn's timetable.

"It's potentially an exciting area. Galactic as a whole may at some point in the future continue to work beyond looking at future projects," Virgin Galactic's CEO George Whitesides told the BBC. "It's an area we continue to think about."

He rejected the suggestion that the US government's technology export laws had in anyway contributed to the project's lack of progress.

In the meantime, the company continues to test its carrier aircraft ("Eve") and its spacecraft.

Sir Richard told a business conference in Kuala Lumpur last week that Galactic was on track to offer its short hops above the atmosphere for paying passengers within 18 months.

The fares to board the spacecraft SpaceShipTwo ("Enterprise") start at $200,000. The company has already taken deposits from more than 300 hopeful passengers.

Private spaceship makes 1st solo glide flight

MOJAVE, Calif. — Virgin Galactic's space tourism rocket SpaceShipTwo has made its first solo glide flight.
SpaceShipTwo was carried aloft 45,000 feet Sunday morning by its mothership and released over the Mojave Desert.
Company officials say SpaceShipTwo then landed at an airport runway on its own followed by the mothership. The entire flight took about 25 minutes.
SpaceShipTwo is undergoing rigorous testing before it can carry tourists to space. In the latest test, SpaceShipTwo did not fire its rocket engine to climb to space.
