It is equipped with many common system components to SS2 (cabin, ECS, speed-brake actuators, avionics, trim servos, air data, test data, video & TM). Thus, the flight test program of WK2 includes many tests that focus on SS2 systems qualification and maturity.

太空航班母舰白色骑士2号首次公开亮相

  北京时间7月29日消息,据英国《每日邮报》报道,在“空中冒险”航空展上,航空业大亨理查德·布兰森揭开了他的新玩具——“白色骑士二号”的神秘面纱。数百名观众得以第一次领略这架用于将私人飞船送入大气层的飞机风采。从布兰森脸上绽放的笑容我们不难看出,他对“白色骑士二号”的表现相当满意。

  “白色骑士二号”由维珍银河研制,它的问世是维珍银河为启动商业太空游服务所作努力的重要组成部分。“白色骑士二号”是一架双机身飞机,外形好似两架机翼连接在一起的飞机。在试验飞机协会举行的“空中冒险”年度航空展上公开亮相前,“白色骑士二号”曾于27日在跑道上兜了几圈。

  随着这架双机身飞机顺利飞入蓝天,站在停机坪上观看的布兰森及工程师伯特·鲁坦的脸上展露出笑容。来自美国佛罗里达州莱德蒂克,现年13岁的阿鲁拉·劳惊讶地说:“真的是太壮观了!”

  根据维珍银河的计划,“白色骑士二号”将负责搭载加压飞船“太空飞船二号”从新墨西哥州一基地起飞,而后进入地球大气层。在达到5万英尺(约合1.524万米左右)的高度后,“太空飞船二号”将与母机分离并以4倍于声速的速度飞向太空。飞船上的6名乘客可以感受大约5分钟的零重力状态同时欣赏地球的美丽景色。在此之后,“太空飞船二号”将以滑翔方式返回地球,这在很大程度上与航天飞机类似。据悉,飞船从起飞到着陆将历时大约两个半小时。

  有意思的是,在《超人归来》一段画面中出现的两架飞机居然与“白色骑士二号”和“太空飞船二号”非常相像。片中,洛伊丝·赖恩登上一架充当运输机的喷气客机,其所搭载的飞行器与航天飞机类似。按照计划,喷气机负责将飞行器送入大气层,由于发生意外,所搭载的飞行器未能顺利脱离母机,母机则在飞行器强大推进器的带动下失去控制,飞速坠向地面。就在这危急关头,超人及时出现,力挽狂澜,拯救机组人员及乘客的生命。

  维珍银河官员表示,安全是他们的“指路明灯”。公司商业主管斯蒂芬·阿滕伯勒说:“除了确保飞行安全外,我们还必须让乘客获得难忘的飞行体验。”据悉,私人太空游计划是在鲁坦与维珍集团主席布兰森达成合作后敲定的。2004年,鲁坦设计的“太空飞船一号”在母机“白色骑士一号”帮助下,成为世界上第一艘进入太空的私人载人飞船。鲁坦也因此创造历史并获得高达1000万美元的安萨里X大奖。

  据阿滕伯勒透露,“白色骑士二号”已经进行了16次试飞。在秋季到来前,维珍银河将一直对这架母机进行测试,在此之后,“太空飞船二号”的测试之门也将开启。据悉,布兰森计划与92岁的父亲以及89岁的母亲一起参加“太空飞船二号”的第一次太空之旅。

  “白色骑士二号”昵称“伊夫”以向布兰森的母亲致敬。其两个机身印有一幅展现一位头戴太空头盔的女性的图画。从外形上看,“白色骑士二号”更像是半个闪烁着白光的字母“E”。布兰森说:“绝大多数人从不相信这种事情能够成为现实。实际上,只要敢于大胆尝试,你就能创造出新事物。”

  马修·普利兹克现年27岁,从小就是一个科幻迷,现在芝加哥经营一家投资公司。目前,他已经预订了太空游的机票。一直以来,普利兹克就希望亲自感受一下无重状态。他表示,自己并不会感到紧张,只把太空游想象成一次坐过山车。

  普利兹克称,他的最大梦想就是能够在某一天登上月球并留下自己的脚印,“太空飞船二号”的出现让他朝着实现这一梦想迈出了重要一步。他说:“事实必将证明,此次冒险之旅将最终成为旅游业的一个重要转折点。对于从小看着天上的星星长大的人来说,‘太空飞船二号’意味着太多太多东西。”

OSHKOSH 2009: Virgin Galactic flies high at Oshkosh

Virgin Galactic pulled off a coup at Oshkosh, flying WhiteKnight Two for the first time in public on 28 July, the day it signed a $280 million deal with an Abu Dhabi investor that will see Sir Richard Branson's venture move into the satellite launch sector.

The arrangement gives Aabar Investments - ultimately owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan - a 32% stake in the space tourism company and opens the door for the development of a spaceport in the Gulf emirate, the second after the first base in New Mexico.

Aabar is the largest shareholder in German car maker Daimler and has a stake in electric vehicle developer Tesla.

Virgin Galactic will use the cash injection to develop equipment - including a new pylon between the twin hulls of WhiteKnight Two - able to carry a two-stage launcher and satellite weighing up to 200kg (440lb), with a total payload of 17t- into orbit. The aircraft is designed as the mothership for Virgin Galactic's spaceliner SpaceShip Two.

Virgin Galactic's chief executive Will Whitehorn says that the company will begin its space cargo business in about three years time, two years after it expects to carry the first paying space tourists into suborbit. "For the first five or six years, 80% of our business will be tourism, but five to nine years after that it will be 50/50 [between passengers and cargo or training and scientific flights]," he says.

Whitehorn says the company could take the cost of launching a satellite into space using a ground-based launcher from $30 million to "as low as $2 million" using WhiteKnight Two.

He expects the first satellite launchers to be Virgin's own design, either built at its factory in Mojave, California or contracted out to a specialist manufacturer, but eventually the aircraft will be able to carry third-party boosters.

Whitehorn says that Virgin Galactic was approached by Aabar because the latter saw the opportunity beyond space tourism for the Scaled Composites-built WhiteKnight Two.

"This investment now gives us the capital to take us through the commercial launch and build an extra WhiteKnight for the satellite business," he says.

Virgin Galactic says it expects to fly SpaceShip Two on WhiteKnight Two from New Mexico in  December.

As with the facility in New Mexico, which is owned by the state, Virgin Galactic does not expect to invest in the Abu Dhabi spaceport.

"We will enter into a leasing agreement," says Whitehorn.

Further spaceports are mooted for the north of Scotland and Scandinavia, where there is expected to be demand for flights to view phenomena such as the Northern Lights.

Branson joined Scaled Composites test pilots Peter Siebold and Clint Nichols for the flight at Oshkosh. The vehicle, which remained on static display, drew huge crowds all week.

Virgin Galactic unveiled a new partnership Tuesday that pushes the throttle forward on its plans for commercial suborbital space travel and a new small satellite launch capacity.

The deal involves Abu Dhabi's Aabar Investments and Virgin Galactic, the commercial spaceliner group bankrolled by British billionaire Sir Richard Branson to fly "pay-per-view" customers to the edge of space.

Specifics of the partnership, which includes Aabar investing $280 million in Virgin Galactic in return for an equity stake, were outlined today at the Experimental Aircraft Association's (EAA) AirVenture convention in Oshkosh, Wisc., which is now under way.

To date, Virgin Galactic has been wholly owned and funded by Branson's Virgin Group. The new flush of Aabar money is also targeted to fund a small satellite launch capability making use of the WhiteKnightTwo carrier plane, now undergoing extensive trial runs.

The WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) mothership - christened "Eve" after Branson's mother - flew into the AirVenture air show yesterday for its debut public demonstration flight in Oshkosh.

As the largest all-composite aircraft ever built, the WK2 was designed and built by Mojave, Calif.-based Scaled Composites, a firm now owned by Northrop Grumman and founded by aerospace master craftsman, Burt Rutan.

The WK2 is designed to haul the six-passenger/two-pilot SpaceShipTwo to launch altitude, and then release the spacecraft so it can begin its suborbital flight. SpaceShipTwo is likely to be unveiled publicly in December and then begin its own set of in-flight evaluations.

Branson is slated today to be onboard VMS Eve as a member of the crew for a demonstration flight at the air show. To date, the WK2 had flown some 15 times, expanding its performance capabilities prior to its cross-country hop to the Oshkosh convention.

Smallsat launches

"It's a busy day," said Virgin Galactic President Will Whitehorn. "This is a big deal...and for us it's an important strategic move," he told SPACE.com in a pre-signing exclusive interview.

Aabar is a very savvy investor, Whitehorn said. "What was particularly exciting, when we began discussions with Aabar, is that they were prepared to commit to doing something that we're very, very keen to develop quickly...which is a satellite launch vehicle."

Whitehorn said the deal is not going to change Virgin Galactic's space program from the point of view of space tourism or space science using SpaceShipTwo.

"What it is going to do is change the speed which we can now start the satellite development work," Whitehorn added.

Whitehorn said a business plan is being evolved by working very closely with Surrey Satellite Technology Limited, a leading small satellite company based in Guildford, United Kingdom. That group has already delivered operational space missions for a range of applications including Earth observation, science and communications.

"The result of this deal with Aabar, we'll have satellite launch capability within three years," Whitehorn said.

Deal details

The deal signed today between Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group, and Mohamed Badawy Al-Husseiny, Chief Executive Officer of Aabar, centers on a number of aspects:

Aabar will invest approximately $280 million and take around a 32 percent stake in Virgin Galactic's holding company.

Aabar has committed some $100 million extra to fund a small satellite launch capability, subject to the development of a full business plan.

Aabar will gain exclusive regional rights, subject to regulatory clearances, to host Virgin Galactic tourism and scientific research space flights. Aabar has plans to build a science center and spaceport facilities in Abu Dhabi.

According to a Virgin Galactic issued press statement, the new infusion of cash means the spaceliner company is fully funded through to its commencement of commercial suborbital operations.

Branson's Virgin Group has invested over $100 million in Virgin Galactic since its formation in late 2004.

Aabar Investments PJSC is an investment company headquartered in Abu Dhabi and is on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange. It directly invests in various sectors including energy, infrastructure, real estate, automotive and financial services companies. Its largest shareholder is the International Petroleum Investment Company, which in turn is wholly owned by the Government of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

7月29日消息 阿尔巴投资公司(Aabar Investments)计划出资购入维珍银河(Virgin Galactic) 32%的股权,显示出阿布扎比酋长国雄心日渐增长。

据英国《金融时报》报道,阿尔巴投资公司的最大股东是国际石油投资公司(International Petroleum Investment Company),而后者隶属于阿布扎比政府。

维珍银河是英国企业家布莱信爵士(Sir Richard Branson)旗下的商业太空旅行公司,创立于2004年,目前的目标是在2年内开始让私人旅客体验太空旅行,票价为20万美元。

另外,阿尔巴投资公司还计划另外投资1亿美元,用于资助研究,使维珍银河有可能从无人驾驶的火箭上发射小型卫星。

维珍银河总裁怀特霍恩(Will Whitehorn)认为,这笔新投资带来了显著的推动作用,使该项目得到充分投资,直至商业化。

Airlines in loss. Military and civil programmes under threat. Business aviation in disgrace and aerospace manufacturing suffering cancelled orders, plunging revenues and redundancies. Sometimes it takes an event like AirVenture in Oshkosh to remind us that aviation - at its grass roots - is all about liberation, innovation and the sheer joy of flying.

General aviation is not immune to the economic downturn, as flying schools and small charter operators struggle and even leisure pilots fly less and put off purchases.

But - while the world's best-attended air show in the unassuming Wisconsin city has its hard business edge - most of the visitors are there to indulge their passion for flying and marvel in the latest attempt to stretch the boundaries of aerospace technology.

This year's stars of the show were the A380 - still a rare sight in the US Midwest - and Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnight Two: the mothership that will carry the first tourist spaceship towards the edge of the Earth's atmosphere.

The lack of scepticism with which Oshkosh greets such technological marvels is refreshing to those of us used to - rightly - scrutinising the commercial case for new products, whether they be superjumbo airliners or very light jets. AirVenture is not a business show in the strict sense.

Few attending the event will be stumping up the $200,000 needed for a trip in Sir Richard Branson's spaceship. Few are likely to have travelled on the A380 from the two North American airports its operators serve. The most active vendors are those offering hats and hot dogs.

However, with more than half a million visitors, Oshkosh is the perfect platform to create a buzz for a product, which is why entrepreneurs such as Branson rate it so highly and why the A380 shows up among the micro-lights, aerobatic trainers and pistons.

Executives do not have to deal with probing questions from financial journalists. Most of the scribes there are enthusiasts themselves. They are not under pressure to reveal reasons for delays to programmes. Market shares, capital outlays and risk are concepts for another day.

In a cynical age, Oshkosh worships innovators in the way that 100 years ago the Bleriots and Wrights were hailed as heroes. So amid the news analysis and hard-edged scrutiny of our industry on Flightglobal - joins in that enthusiasm and toasts the spirit of Oshkosh.

    “白骑士二号”号称世界最大全碳纤维材料飞机,在两个机身的外侧各装有两台发动机,翼展大约43米。机翼中部下方可悬挂载人航天器“太空船二号”。太空船体长18米,大小如同一架普通的公务机,多数部件由高技术超轻材料制成,使船体重量大为减轻。船体尾部有火箭助推装置,为飞船挣脱地球引力提供动力。太空船由两名飞行员操纵,可以搭载6名乘客进入太空。“白骑士二号”将“太空船二号”携带到约1.5万米高空释放,太空船随即点燃固液混合火箭,能一直加速、爬升到距地表大约100千米以上的地方。当飞船冲破大气层到达距地球112千米的高度时,毫无专业经验的太空游客们才能解开安全带,在太空船舱内享受4~6分钟失重的感觉,同时游客可以透过舷窗俯瞰美丽的地球家园。为了便于游客欣赏外面景色,每个座位两边都有一个直径约0.45米的窗口。整个旅行历时大约两个半小时。

    以擅长设计外形怪异的飞机而闻名的伯特·鲁坦旗下的“缩尺复合材料公司”是26个参赛团队之一。他从1996年4月开始构思,在微软创始人之一、慈善家保罗·艾伦投入2500万美元的资助下,2001年5月开始全面研制。具体方案是:“太空船一号”由名为“白骑士一号”的母机挂载,用一小时爬升到15000米高空后脱离,启动火箭发动机,以每小时4000千米的速度向上冲刺,65秒后达到100千米高度。沿抛物线飞行4分钟后开始下降,此时将有3分多钟的失重状态。在24000米高度,飞机开始滑翔,17分钟后降落。“太空船一号”主要采用复合材料,密封增压座舱可乘坐3人,上升时最大过载不超过6G,返回时气压会骤增,但健康人可以承受,舱内只需穿普通服装。

    2004年6月21日,由62岁的迈克·梅尔韦尔驾驶的“太空船一号”, 由“白骑士一号”的喷气式飞机搭载升空,用90分钟完成了一次历史性的旅程。“白骑士一号”在飞抵15千米高空时,释放出“太空船一号”,飞船火箭在发动机点火后将速度提高到声速的3倍左右,然后垂直攀升至约50千米高空,在火箭发动机关闭后,太空船再向上“冲”到距离地面约103千米的太空,停留片刻后返回地球,降落在加利福尼亚州莫哈韦沙漠一家机场的跑道上。2004年9月29日和10月4日,该机又两次达到100千米高度,赢得“安萨里X大奖”。这次飞行完全是由民间开发的,预示着个人有能力成就太空之行。

    “奥泰格大奖”的目的是促进问世不久的飞机进入商业领域,成为普通人的交通工具,看来这个目的达到了,2008年一年,有22亿人次乘飞机空中旅行。遨游太空也是很多人的梦想,然而有幸进入太空的人却少得可怜:自1961年人类首次进入太空以来,迄今只有400多名宇航员有幸从太空遥望我们的蓝色地球家园。2001年美国人蒂托自费“太空七日游”,截至2009年3月只有6个人进入太空,他们都花了2000多万美元。

    “老顽童”布兰森

    要把生意做到太空

    伯特·鲁坦研制的“太空船”飞行成功,立即让一个人看到了商机,这个人就是号称“老顽童”的英国亿万富翁、“维珍品牌”的创始人、维珍集团的领导人理查德·布兰森。布兰森精力充沛,他曾因多次航空冒险行动而名声大振。他是世界上第一个乘坐热气球穿越大西洋和太平洋的人。他多次试图成为世界首位乘坐热气球不间断环球航行的人,但没有成功。现在,布兰森仍没有停止他“疯子”般的冒险,他的下个目标就是把生意做到太空。在布兰森看来,不是只有航天员才可以欣赏到神秘美丽的太空,普通人也应该有这样的机会。

Virgin Galactic adds satellite launches to space tourism

Virgin Galactic now plans to launch satellites as well as tourists into space, the company confirmed at this week's International Astronautical Congress in Daejeon, South Korea.

The company, which mooted the idea in February, has established a division that will both develop a launch rocket and seek satellite customers for it. Satellite propulsion and launch expert Adam Baker from Surrey Satellite Technology (SSTL) in Guildford, UK, has been hired to run Virgin's satellite venture. He has previously overseen the design and launch of many microsatellites at SSTL, including its Disaster Monitoring Constellation.

Behind the decision to press ahead, says Virgin Galactic president Will Whitehorn, are encouraging results from the flight tests of WhiteKnightTwo, the four-engined aircraft that will loft the SpaceShipTwo tourist craft to a height of 15 kilometres before the latter separates and fires its rocket motor.

Lift off
Virgin will use the same space-flight technology developed by Scaled Composites of Mojave, California, which won the Ansari X-prize for getting the first privately funded reusable spacecraft above the Karman line – the official edge of "space" at 100 kilometres altitude – twice in a two-week period in 2004.

While that craft – SpaceShipOne – had a crew of one, SpaceShipTwo will carry six people. It will be formally unveiled in its Virgin Galactic livery on 7 December, says Whitehorn, prior to its rocket flight tests.

Because WhiteKnightTwo is designed to air-launch SpaceShipTwo, the expectation is that WhiteKnightTwo will launch satellites in a similar way using an expendable two-stage rocket that could be slung beneath it. This would reach low Earth orbit.

"This effort will involve designing, building and marketing a launcher rather than the satellites themselves," says Whitehorn. "We hope to get satellite launches underway by 2013 or 2014."

Cost-cutters

Virgin's stated aim is to reduce the cost of lofting small 50-kilogram satellites into low Earth orbit from about $10 million today to about $1 million.

Virgin has financial backing for its latest move. In July, Aabar Investments of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates invested $280 million for a 32 per cent stake in Virgin Galactic's space tourism operation – with a further $110 million promised if its creates a viable satellite launch business, which could make Abu Dhabi a hub for satellite launches.

Existing air-launched satellite options include one from Orbital Sciences, based in Dulles, Virginia, which launches a satellite-carrying Pegasus rocket from a sling beneath a modified Lockheed L-1011 airliner.

Sierra Nevada Corporation could air drop its Dream Chaser spaceplane prototype using Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo if it wins funds from NASA's Commercial Crew Development programme.

The Nevada-based space systems manufacturer has submitted a proposal for NASA's crew programme that would see a weight-representative Dream Chaser test article air-dropped for a runway landing. The test would be for the subsonic flight phase aerodynamics and the effectiveness of the control surfaces and some avionic systems.

NASA's programme will award funded space act agreements (SAA) next month distributing a total sum of $50 million. Dream Chaser, a vehicle that would deliver three or up to seven crew to the International Space Station depending on the level of cargo it also carries, would be launched by a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V.

"[The test article] could be air dropped by WhiteKnightTwo, this is how our types of companies can co-operate," says Sierra Nevada's space systems board executive vice-president and chairman Mark Sirangelo, referring to the community of entrepreneurial companies that refer to themselves as New Space.

He adds that ULA has conducted detailed studies for Sierra on the viability of launching Dream Chaser on an Atlas V and that the work had gone far enough "for [us] to be confident" of success.

Dream Chaser will use Sierra hybrid rockets in three ways: as a launch abort system, for the de-orbit burn motors and for powering, in part, the descent to a runway. A test firing of this motor technology was conducted in September.

Sierra's subsidiary Spacedev is a recipient of an unfunded NASA SAA under the agency's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services programme. Sirangelo says the company has "spent millions" of its own money on Dream Chaser's development, which includes completion of four of the 12 agreed SAA milestones, which included Dream Chaser's preliminary design review.

Scaled Composites has added holes to the inboard spoilers of Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnight Two mothership prototype Eve.

Photographed on 15 October during its twentieth test flight that lasted around 4h, the carrier aircraft was performing high angle-of-descent approaches during a sequence of touch-and-go manoeuvres.

Scaled Composites and Virgin Galactic have declined to explain why the holes have been added, but these modifications would reduce the degree of drag the spoilers provide and are the latest in a series of changes to the WK2's control surfaces this year.

The mothership had not made a test flight since its 1 August return from the EAA AirVenture air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, a 10-week hiatus that is the longest since its maiden flight on 21 December 2008.

The changes to the spoilers follow a series of structural modifications to WK2's rudders earlier this year including the addition of extra control cables just before the Oshkosh air show. At the air show Scaled's chief engineer and founder Burt Rutan explained that WK2 had had an "unstable rudder".

As for the spoiler modifications, Virgin Galactic president Will Whitehorn says: "This innovation is to prepare WK2 for [the SpaceShipTwo] captive carry flights by what [Scaled Composite president] Doug Shane calls 'a continued refinement of the spoiler geometry to optimise loads and buffeting levels'. The first [SS2 captive] flights will be in early 2010."

In the pictures the results of what is likely to be preparatory work on the WK2 wing for the attachment system for mating SpaceShipTwo can also be seen. There are dark stripes on top of the wing and the underside, which also has white stripes. Eve made its second public demonstration at Edwards AFB's Flight Test Nation 2009 air show on 17 October.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency wants to air launch a suborbital demonstrator by 2014 to test technologies for its planned two-stage to orbit advanced space transport system. The technologies are for reusability, health monitoring and aircraft-like operability. Released at 36,000ft (11,000m) at a speed of about 456kt (845km/h), the vehicle would fire its rocket engines to reach 100km (62miles) and glide back for a runway landing. JAXA is interested in using Virgin Galactic's WhteKnight Two as a carrier aircraft.
