Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo (SS2) mothership WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) is to fly publicly for the first time at this year's Experimental Aircraft Association's (EAA) AirVenture air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on the event's opening day, 27 July.

The experimental prototype WK2, referred to as Virgin MotherShip (VMS) Eve by Virgin Galactic, will have additional demonstration flights at the show until its 1 August departure and will be on static display during the course of the week. Flightglobal.com's blog Hyperbola reported on 1 August 2008 that WK2 was likely to fly at this year's AirVenture, while Virgin Galactic had originally wanted to fly the mothership at last year's event.

Designed by Scaled Composites VMS Eve has had two test flights so far, the first on 21 December last year and the second on 5 February. The second flight saw the addition of vortex generators on the vertical stabilisers to counter what appeared to be a fishtail effect during the maiden flight. Neither Scaled or Virgin Galactic would confirm that there was an issue with the rudder.

The construction of the SS2 experimental prototype is said by Virgin Galactic to be about 80% complete and the company's president Will Whitehorn is expecting to conduct carry test flights with VMS Eve and SS2 during the second half of this year. Though there have been rumours that Eve could arrive at Airventure with SS2 attached.

About the 27 July public debut Whitehorn says: "Together with Scaled Composites, we are delighted to be showcasing this incredible vehicle and demonstrating its capabilities in public for the very first time. VMS Eve is capable of lifting SS2, an unmanned satellite launcher or space science vehicle and also being capable of use as an astronaut training vehicle. It is particularly appropriate that we are doing this at the 2009 AirVenture event in conjunction with the EAA, which has done so much over the years to support and promote aerospace innovation."

Referring to an unmanned satellite launcher Whitehorn is in talks with micro satellite manufacturer Surrey Satellite Technology and the UK government about the development of a two-stage rocket for launcihing small spacecraft into orbit. Further news about EAA can be obtained via its twitter site.

A third test flight of the huge carrier craft - which looks like a giant catamaran for the sky - is deemed as "imminent", said Will Whitehorn, President of Virgin Galactic - the company put into business by U.K. adventurer and billionaire Richard Branson and his Virgin Group, created

Virgin Galactic's aim is to propel public space travel into reality.

WhiteKnightTwo's builders, the Mojave spaceport-based Scaled Composites, unveiled the spacecraft mothership on July 28, 2008. That rollout was followed by a Dec. 21 maiden flight with another scurry into the sky taking place in early February.

While the third flight of the vehicle is close at hand, "we never give a date in advance as we only take off in light winds and generally good weather at this stage in an experimental program," Whitehorn told SPACE.com.

"Rush hour"

WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) will haul the suborbital SpaceShipTwo spaceliner to a high-altitude release point. That spaceship, the first of which is nearing completion, has moved from drawings to hardware thanks to the Scaled Composites work force under the watchful eye of the firm's founder, Burt Rutan - now Chief Technology Officer and Chairman Emeritus of the company.

Roaring to life via a hybrid rocket motor, SpaceShipTwo will carry two pilots and six passengers on a suborbital trajectory, scooting the rubber-necking "rush hour" commuters to the edge of space and returning them to terra firma at $200,000 a seat.

Whitehorn said that testing of the WK2 carrier plane - christened "Eve" in honor of Richard Branson's mother - has gone well.

"We now have just under four hours flying on WhiteKnightTwo and have now gone above 18,000 feet," Whitehorn said. "We are very pleased with progress so far and it would be fair to describe her performance so far as flawless," he added.

The up-and-coming next test flight is set to raise the bar in altitude and flight-duration of the vehicle, Whitehorn said, among other items.

Aircraft heading: Oshkosh, Wisconsin

For those hungering for an up close and personal look at WhiteKnightTwo, best head for the Experimental Aircraft Association's AirVenture extravaganza being held July 27-Aug. 2 in Oshkosh, Wisc.

After successfully completing its initial flight test program, space launch vehicle Virgin Mothership (VMS) Eve is slated to make its "world public debut" there on July 27.

The space launch vehicle will arrive as part of the opening-day air show.

AirVenture attendees are being promised opportunities for up-close viewing of the vehicle on the ground each day until its departure flight as part of the Saturday, Aug. 1 air show. Event organizers and Virgin Galactic officials are also scoping out additional showcase flights during the week.

Whitehorn pointed out that VMS Eve is not only being designed to lift SpaceShipTwo. The Virgin Galactic business case for space also includes unmanned satellite launch or doubling as a space science vehicle, as well as an astronaut training craft.

According to Whitehorn, Virgin Galactic plans to conduct test flights of VMS Eve carrying SpaceShipTwo during the second half of 2009.

To solve handling and stability problems Virgin Galactic has made structural modifications to the vertical stabiliser fins of its WhiteKnight Two carrier aircraft prototype Virgin MotherShip (VMS) Eve.

Flightglobal.com has obtained photographic evidence that VMS Eve's two booms' vertical stabilisers have been reshaped by prime contractor Scaled Composites for a larger lower rudder hinge and a more pronounced horn that may contain a heavier counterweight. The image also shows two new vortex generators added just forward of the lower hinge point and the right boom's fin has a new antenna bulb attached to its top.

The two pictures in the composite image below were taken before and after the second test flight that took place on 5 February. The left hand side of the composite image was taken before that second flight and it is the port boom.

The right hand side of the composite image shows the starboard boom since the second test, now altered in preparation for the 25 March third flight. Before the 25 March test the left boom fin was altered in the same way as the right hand stabiliser.

The spaceline's president Will Whitehorn had described the 5 February second flight as "flawless".

The structural modifications to the fins would explain the seven week gap between the second and third flights. Virgin Galactic declines to comment on any aspect of the test flight programme in detail including technical matters regarding the flight test prototype VMS Eve.

Flight first reported a possible rudder issue for VMS Eve on 7 January this year and published a photo on 6 February showing the prototype with vortex generators added to the vertical stabilisers.

还可以体验被一枚火箭推着加速的感觉,看到蓝色的地球飘浮在黑色的宇宙背景里,整个过程就像坐过山车一样,很多人会迷恋上这种感觉而愿意再掏20万美元。

  “我要用低廉的价格,把人类安全地从地球移居到其他星球。”埃隆·马斯克(Elon Mask)说。

  埃隆·马斯克是美国一家名为太空探测技术(Space Exploration Technologies)的私人公司的总裁兼创始人。上周,他刚刚从奥巴马政府间接获得16亿美元的经费支持,用于商用太空梭(地球和太空之间的运输工具)的开发。

  由于金融危机,百业萧条,而商用太空开发却依然是美国社会上下的热门话题。担负国际空间站人员和物资运输的老一代太空梭即将退休、新的“战神火箭”要到2015年才能赴任,在这个青黄不接的时刻,美国宇航局(NASA)于是将目光转向私人公司。毫无疑问,这16亿美元的经费到了埃隆·马斯克手中,将会成为美国太空旅游技术发展的有力助推器。

  2009年,商业航天和太空探索并驾齐驱的趋势逐渐凸显。越来越多的人表示出了对太空旅行的强烈兴趣。已经成功将6名游客送往太空的俄罗斯宇航局,靠太空旅游项目大赚一笔之后,在今年春天,他们又悄然将太空旅游的价格从2500万美元提升到4000万美元。NASA日前公布的一份报告称,“如果太空游的价格为10万美元/人的话,目前有将近100万人会购买”。同样,日本宇宙航空研究开发所近日也发布一份报告,预测太空旅游在10年内将持续趋热,而每年市场价值将稳定在上百亿美元以上。

  人类对太空旅行的迫切渴望,正驱使着各国宇航局及相关机构对商用太空技术开发的新一轮竞争。

  太空旅行第一站

  美国新墨西哥州(New mexico)南部的茫茫沙漠,本是个不毛之地。不过,这里很快就会成为太空旅游爱好者的天堂。全球首个商业太空飞船发射基地——美国航天港(Spaceport America)已经在这里拔地而起,工程正进行得如火如荼,整个建设到2009年底或2010年初竣工。占地总面积近万平方米的美国航天港,由美国URS公司和另一家英国公司联合设计,总耗资预计3100万美元。整个美国航天港主要由飞机库和航站楼两组建筑构成,新墨西哥州航天港管理局(NMSA)负责人凯利·欧得勒(Kelly Adler)说:“当游客和宇航员通过深隧道入口进入大楼时,此设计达到易亲近和私密性的平衡。墙面充当展示区,引导人们进入飞机库和办公楼,直达航站楼。自然光通过天窗进入室内,还建有平台供人们观看壮观的飞机跑道。”

  航天港建设还未完成,而英国太空飞行公司维珍银河(Virgin Galactic)已经捷足先登,与新墨西哥州航天港管理局签署了租期20年的协议,租用此建筑7803平方米面积。维珍银河公司表示,他们可能会利用航天港发射航天运输飞机和载人飞船,以供太空旅游者往返。届时,维珍银河将负责管理这里的一切设施,包括飞机和飞船的存放。显然,3100万美元的投资将很快有所回报。维珍银河对这里的设施相当满意——巨大的飞机库能同时存放他们公司的2架“白色骑士二号”(White Knight Two)运输机和5架“太空船二号”(Spaceship Two)载人飞船。

  除了美国南部的沙漠外,维珍银河在今年3月中旬还在瑞典基律纳(Kiruna)建立了航天发射场,估计那里很快也将成为成千上万太空旅游迷津津乐道的地方。维珍银河和瑞典太空运动公司(Spaceport Sweden)已经拟定了一系列计划,从2011年开始,维珍银河将在这里发射“太空船二号”,以相对较低的票价,让更多的中产阶层实现飞天梦想。

  新一代太空交通工具“白色骑士二号”、“太空船二号”近期的多次试飞成功,为维珍银河的“太空游”铺平了道路。而除了维珍银河外,美国太空冒险公司(Space Adventures)也是当今活跃的商用太空开发公司。该公司与俄罗斯宇航局有着长期紧密的合作。他们是俄罗斯宇航局将游客送上太空的幕后推手。由于2009年国际空间站的航运任务繁重,俄罗斯宇航局决定在2010年停止用“联盟号”载人飞船运送太空游客这一业务。不过,为了能为更多旅客提供遨游太空的机会,俄罗斯宇航局已与美国太空冒险公司签署了一项建造“太空游”载人飞船协议。这种“太空游”载人飞船,不再需要像“联盟号”那样兼顾为国际空间站运送物资的任务。飞船内将腾出巨大的空间,让游客在太空旅游过程中享受更多的自由和乐趣。

  “‘太空游’是全球首次太空旅游的‘私人航班’,” 美国太空冒险公司首席执行官爱立克·安德森(Eric Anderson)说,“‘太空游’的推出,将使太空旅游朝着更加成熟的方向发展。”他表示,公司将在2011年后购买更多的太空载人飞船,未来甚至有可能在太空搭建私人经营的空间站,让参与太空旅游的游客在那里落脚。

  一掷千金摆脱地心引力

  “刚开始的时候,头比较晕,不过一天之后,情况就好了。”第三名登上太空的私人旅行者,已过花甲的美国百万富翁格雷格·奥尔森(Greg Olsen),这样描述他在太空失重状态下的感受,“在太空里最大的困难就是,我必须要控制自己的动作,如果我开始向某一个方向移动的话,我会依次移动,直到我碰到一个固体为止,结果我会撞得自己身体青一块紫一块。吃饭和上厕所时也比较难受。”三年多之前,格雷格·奥尔森乘俄罗斯“联盟TMA-6号”飞船升空,成功抵达了国际空间站。他在空间站上停留近8天后,与两名宇航员一起返回地面。整个旅程为期10天,奥尔森此支付了2000万美元。

  根据美国太空冒险公司的太空旅游项目,目前的太空游主要分为太空轨道飞行、亚轨道飞行、高空极限飞行、零重力体验游等几个项目。在零重力体验游中,游客被送到美国奥兰多(Orlando),乘坐由豪华客机改造的飞行器直穿云霄,在3至4个小时的时间里体验15个抛物线飞行,感受像嫦娥那样飘起来的失重状态,整个失重体验时间将持续90至100分钟,报价在1万美元左右。其成本较低,技术上比较成熟,安全也较有保障。在报价1万至2万美元的高空极限飞行游中,游客将乘坐F18军用飞机升至亚太空,飞船进入太空后,离开地球表面的大气层,开始进入太空边缘,在距离地面大约100公里处,由于速度和动力赶不上真正的宇宙飞船,不能围绕地球轨道飞行。但在那里,游客可以感受几分钟的失重,看地球蓝到发亮的奇异景象。报价为10万至20万美元的亚太空轨道飞行,游客可乘专机在亚太空轨道内随地球一起转动,并环绕地球一圈。报价为2000万美元起的真正太空飞行,游客可与航天员乘飞船以每秒7.8公里的卫星飞行速度,围绕地球的轨道在离地面200~400公里高的太空轨道上飞行,进入国际空间站参观。此时,一直处于微重力的失重状态。奥尔森选择的就是最后一种旅游线路。

  另外,几年后,“太空旅馆游”和月球旅行也可能出现在太空旅游的“菜单”上面。目前俄罗斯和美国都已经提出这项计划,运送旅客的飞船必须携带助推器以推动其飞向月球。游客将有机会在环月轨道上俯瞰地球美景,并可以近距离观察月球表面。

  除了价格以外,在太空旅行中,游客的身体素质也一个关键因素。游客的身体能否适应太空旅游?虽然到太空中去旅游,不需要像航天员一样的身体,但也必须要能经受火箭起飞时的巨大噪音、震动、过载等种种考验,同时,还必须能够耐受强辐射、温度骤变和长时间失重等太空环境。因此,美国太空冒险公司会根据不同旅游项目,和游客签订一系列复杂的身体安全健康协议,在旅行前为游客安排一些太空训练。北京大学地球与空间环境学院教授焦维新则认为,太空游客并不一定非要达到航天员的体质,具备一定身体素质的人,经过一定的适应性训练,基本都能完成。

  维珍银河也注意到了价格和游客身体要求这两方面的因素。他们在日后主推的太空旅游线路体现出了平民化的趋势。2011年即将投入使用的太空船二号,从瑞典基律纳航天发射场出发。飞船将先由火箭携至15公里的高空。然后火箭发动机点火,推动飞船飞入130公里高的太空。飞船在太空中的滞留时间大约为4分钟,一次飞行费用约为15万欧元。“太空游客乘坐太空船二号完成短时间太空飞行后,能够得到和目前国际太空站游客相同的感受,而且费用低廉,中产阶层的代表就能负担得起。”瑞典太空运动公司经理约翰娜·伯格斯多·努尔(Johanna Bergstram-Roos)指出,“这种旅行对身体健康没有特别严格的限制,太空失重时限仅为1分钟左右,远远低于国际太空站游客必须承受的10分钟的失重痛苦,因此85%的太空旅游爱好者都能轻松通过医学体检关。”

  太空游的中国现实

  国外太空旅游方兴未艾,中国的民众什么时候能有机会体验这种特殊乐趣?CBN记者分别以媒体记者和普通游客两种身份,联系了香港太空旅游和北京中欧国际旅行社。据悉,两家公司都同美国太空冒险公司签有代理合同。听说记者身份后的香港太空旅游办事处工作人员蒋先生表示:“我们现在的太空旅游计划有变更,我们的公司负责人蒋方,现在美国,你留下电话号码,他会联系你。”但是记者迟迟没有等到回音。第二次记者以普通游客身份拨打了该公司的电话,接电话的年轻女士表示,他们只是该公司在香港的秘书部,主要负责接听电话,如果要报名,需要和他们的北京办事处联系。但当记者询问他们的北京办事处电话时,该女士称不知道北京方面的电话。而记者根据谷歌搜索到的结果,拨打了北京中欧国际旅行社电话。接电话的男士称:“这个公司早就关门了,我们是另一家技术公司,现在使用这个号码。”国内的太空旅游虽有零星线索,但情况仍让人感到一头雾水。

  “在未来,中国可能会发展自己的太空旅游。但现在远不是时候,因为技术还不够成熟。美国、俄罗斯等航天事业起步比较早的几个国家,在太空旅游技术上比较成熟,他们是有条件开展这种商业运作的。”上海宇航协会研究院柴庆澄这样说,“中国在太空上为民造福之处,在于其他方面,比如发射气象卫星,让它们提供更精确的天气预报,或者及时发现森林火灾或者其他自然灾害。又比如,我们国家还发射了探测卫星,高屋建瓴地在地球上发现珍贵矿藏。”神舟六号飞船系统顾问、神五总设计师戚发轫也对媒体表示,中国搞太空旅游还不现实。他认为:“太空飞船的空间相当宝贵。为了充分利用资源,飞船内装了好多东西,但全都是做实验的,空间资源是很贵的,要充分利用,应该以科学发展优先。”焦维新则认为:“发展太空旅游,最主要是钱的问题,降低太空旅游的费用,首先应该取决于航天发射费用的大幅度降低。随着航天技术的进一步发展成熟,航天费用问题也会逐渐得以降低。”

  太空旅游这个词被提出了很多年,但现在远远没有形成产业,未来的道路还很漫长。美国航天局前任官员约翰·曼斯菲尔德(John Mansfield)说了三个“一百倍”:“太空旅游必须便宜一百倍,可靠一百倍,高效一百倍。只有到那个时候,才能有更多的普通人到太空去度假。”

  谷歌创始人抢先预订“太空游”

  “我很自豪地宣布,谷歌公司创始人之一谢尔盖·布林(Sergey Brin)预订了‘太空游’的首个席位。他已经为这次太空游预付了500万美元的订金。”美国太空冒险公司总裁埃里克·安德森(Eric Anderson)亲自宣布了这个消息。当美国太空冒险公司宣布,将于2011年推出全球首架“太空游”的“纯私人”航班时,谷歌公司创始人之一谢尔盖·布林立即花费500万美元预订了这次飞行的一个座位。今年35岁的亿万富翁布林也发表声明说:“我是个对太空疆域的商业开发和探索抱有极大信心的人,我期待着能够进入太空。”过去几年里,美国太空冒险公司和俄罗斯联邦航天署合作,把6名游客先后送上国际空间站。去年10月,布林亲自前往俄罗斯拜科努尔火箭发射场,为好友赴太空旅游送行。

  这次飞赴太空旅游的游客名叫理查德·加里奥特(Richard Garriott),是一个游戏开发人员。之后,他成为了世界上第六名登上太空站的游客。

  “太空游”飞船将以俄“联盟”号载人飞船为蓝本,由一名专业宇航员驾驶,每次可将两名游客送入太空。据了解,布林此次预订的“太空游”全部费用可能超过3500万美元,不过他究竟什么时候飞赴太空还没有确定。这将是人类2011年将首次实现飞往空间站的“全游客化”飞行。其中一个座位被布林预订,另一个目前依然虚位以待。

  俄欲造太空游专用载人飞船

  俄罗斯联邦航天署载人航天项目主管克拉斯诺夫于近日表示,俄罗斯有望在2012年前建造完成专门用于“太空游”项目的载人飞船。

  据国际文传电讯社报道,克拉斯诺夫介绍说,按照俄罗斯联邦航天署与有关公司签署的协议,俄将建造第5艘载人飞船专门用于实施“太空游”项目。由于2009年俄罗斯航天发射等任务繁重,目前还没有建造“太空游”载人飞船的准确时间表,但他认为该飞船有望于2012年前建造完成。

  克拉斯诺夫说,虽然国际空间站今年常驻人员将从目前的3人增至6人,“联盟”号载人飞船的负担将大大加重,但他认为“太空游”项目非常重要,俄“将利用一切机会保留该项目”。

  普通人飞往太空从这里起步

  去年初,维珍银河公司向人们展示了“太空船二号”和母船“白衣骑士二号”的模型。据外刊报道,一年过去了,如今,这两艘飞船已经进行了40多次试飞,并且十分成功,如果顺利,“太空船二号”将成为第一艘定期搭载付费旅客游览太空的飞船。

  据悉,这艘飞船可以搭载6名乘客和2名机组人员,他们的太空旅行将从美国新墨西哥州的一处新建的发射基地开始,“白衣骑士二号”升到5万英尺的高空后,发射“太空船2号”,然后在90秒内,升高到35万英尺高空。这时,“白衣骑士2号”机翼会折叠起来,为随后重新返回大气层作准备。

A tail strike was suffered by Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnight Two prototype Virgin Mothership (VMS) Eve during its fourth test flight on 20 April.

Coming into land for a touch-and-go VMS Eve's pilot was seen to input full right rudder when a 15kt crosswind lifted the wing's starboard side but the prototype still rolled to the left and with a higher than usual nose pitch up the port boom fin's tail struck the ground. Continuing with the touch and go manoeuvre the aircraft took-off but continued to roll left until the pilot overcorrected and the aircraft rolled back right for a nominal climb attitude.

Pictures were obtained by Flightglobal.com of the touch and go and the moment the tail strike occured. The 4h flight test began at 8:08h local time at Mojave air and spaceport where the aircraft's developer Scaled Composites is based and ended at 12:08h.


A witness to the flight test told Flight: "Twice while taxiing back in, [Eve] had steering issues, having to stop, come up with power on one side while holding the brakes to get the two noses straight again."

Reaching a maximum altitude of 20,000ft (6,100m) and a top speed of 140kt (259km/h) Eve retracted and extended its landing gear during the test. According to Virgin Galactic the prototype also "continued flight envelope expansion in the areas of [take-off] gross weight, centre of gravity and g" - Eve is to be able to pull a 6g descending wind up turn for training purposes. The spaceline declined to comment on the tail strike and apparent continuing directional control issues.

Eve is scheduled to fly into the Experimental Aircraft Assocation's AirVenture air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on 27 July and carry out flight demonstrations during that week. The 20 April 4h test suggests that Scaled is preparing for the trans-continental flight from Mojave in California to the mid-western state of Wisconsin.

The twin fuselage aircraft first flew on 21 December 2008, its second flight was on 5 February and the third, seven weeks later, on 25 March. Between each of the test flights the tail fins have seen design changes. Scaled altered the vertical stabilisers with another horn at the rudder's bottom after the first flight, larger horns after the second test and new locations for the vortex generators that had been added after 21 December 2008. Flight had reported a possible rudder problem in January.

Flight's Mojave sources have also identified the purpose of a pod previously seen on top of the starboard vertical fin. Described as a camera it appears to be monitoring tufts on the port wing aft of the vortex generators and on that aileron.

萨里公司想研制火箭

    英国著名小卫星制造公司萨里卫星技术公司正与准备开展太空旅游业务的维珍银河公司一道,探讨是否可以研制一种低成本的火箭,用于发射小型卫星。英国政府38年前放弃了其成功的“黑箭”运载火箭项目。萨里和维珍提出的新项目将完全是一项商业项目,拟由载机把全复合材料的两级火箭携至高空发射,类似于美国的“飞马座”系统。它将利用维珍公司拟用于亚轨道太空旅游业务的“白骑士二号”载机。两家公司希望政府帮助为开展短期可行性论证提供经费,但最终研制出的火箭系统将采取商业运营方式,而不是由政府经营。英国国家航天中心已表示,政府方面将全力支持这种火箭的研制。萨里希望火箭能把至少50公斤有效载荷送入最低400公里的极轨道,而工程技术人员的目标是使最大有效载荷能力达到200公斤。萨里说,目前该公司每颗小卫星的发射费用在500~1000万美元之间,而新火箭要争取将其降低到接近100万美元的水平。萨里于2008年年中开始与维珍公司洽谈该项目,称日益增长的全球微小卫星市场能够支撑起这样一项业务。维珍对萨里方面的结论表示认同,并将火箭命名为“发射者一号”。萨里公司有官员说,火箭将由第三方而不是萨里和维珍来研制,有可能是一家英国公司,但估计会需要一些美国的发动机部件。“白骑士二号”载机正在由美国升高复合材料公司研制。

   中新网5月13日电据香港媒体报道,英国维珍银河公司13日开始在香港招收太空游客,每人团费为20万美元,预料最快可在2011年成行。

    维珍银河太空旅游公司委托香港美丽华旅游公司,于13日开始为太空旅游招客。

    一艘宇宙飞船可载6名旅客及2名机师,整个旅程约2小时,宇宙飞船会进入太空4分钟,而旅客可在太空舱内逗留2分钟。这个太空之旅的费用为每人20万美元。

    参加太空游的旅客,需要接受为期3天的航天员训练,包括无重状态的适应练习,以及体格测试。预料港人最快在2011年可上太空旅游。

20万美元 只是初期的价格,真正成熟并形成市场,费用将会降低很多很多。。

这种旅行除了短短的几分钟失重,更主要的是能够俯瞰地球!

Virgin Galactic today announces the successful completion of the first phase of tests of the rocket motor that will propel space tourists, scientists and payloads into space.

In the desert of southern California, Virgin Galactic's key supplier Scaled Composites and its subcontractor SNC (Sierra Nevada Corporation) have successfully completed the first tests of the innovative rocket motor that will propel space tourists, scientists and payloads into space. The hybrid Nitrous Oxide system being used is the largest of its kind in the world and it will send Virgin's customers up into sub-orbital space at speeds over 2500 mph (4000kmh), to heights over 65 miles (110km) above the Earth’s surface, before the spaceship descends back down through the atmosphere using its pioneering feathered re-entry system.

Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Galactic said: “As Virgin Galactic gets ever closer to the start of commercial operations, we are reaching and passing many important and historic milestones. The Virgin MotherShip (VMS) Eve, the first of our amazing, all carbon composite, high altitude WhiteKnightTwo launch vehicles, is flying superbly. SpaceShipTwo, which will air launch from Eve, is largely constructed and awaiting the start of its own test flight programme later this year.”
The rocket motor burns for a very short period of time because the spaceship is launched from VMS Eve in the upper atmosphere, rather than from ground level. This means much less fuel is required, and the fuel burn is more environmentally benign than the solid rockets used in most ground based systems.

While the rocket motor is extremely powerful, it is also completely controllable. This system can - if necessary - be shut down at any time, allowing the spaceship to glide back down to land at a conventional runway. This is a significant feature in the overall safety of the Virgin system for human space flight.

Sir Richard continues: “Less fuel and clean fuel all add up to a space launch system which will be completely unprecedented in its low environmental impact compared with current space flight. The spaceship’s carbon footprint for each of its passengers and crew will be about a quarter of that for a return trip from London to New York, demonstrating again the extraordinary benefits that new technology can bring to the quest for clean transportation.”

“We believe space is on the cusp of a new industrial revolution. Virgin Galactic’s mission has always been to transform the safety, cost and environmental impact of access to space. Not just for passengers, but also for a range of important scientific purposes, and to send small satellites into orbit. The rocket motor will continue a series of exhaustive tests, and the spaceship itself will start flight testing later this year. The testing programme for the rocket, the spaceship and VMS Eve will be extensive.

应该是Spacedev Inc.生产的,和Spaceship1一样。不太清楚是不是专用的,Spacedev曾经设计了一种火箭使用这种hybrid engine,用于COTS投标。
查了一下,Spacedev Inc.已经被SNC收购了。
