India set to launch imaging satellite with Israeli support

Bangalore, Mar 20 (PTI) India is all set to launch a radar imaging satellite (RISAT) built with "substantial inputs" from the Israel aerospace industry from Sriharikota spaceport, an ISRO official said today.

Israel has supplied Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which is in fact "heart" of the 1780-kg remote sensing satellite, the official told PTI on condition of anonymity. "Israel has supplied substantial systems," the ISRO official said.

The Israeli "inputs" are seen as a "return gesture" by the Jewish State to New Delhi for launching an Israeli spacecraft Techsar on board India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle from Sriharikota last year.

"RISAT is likely to be launched in the first half of April. We are looking at April five or six," the official said.

An active sensor, SAR operates in the microwave range of electromagnetic spectrum and provides the target parameters such as dielectric constant, roughness, and geometry. PTI

RISAT是A3从以色列买的?

India buys Israeli spy satellite: report

NEW DELHI, March 20 (AFP) Mar 20, 2009

India has bought a spy satellite from Israel with day-and-night viewing capability to boost surveillance capabilities in the aftermath of the Mumbai militant attacks, a report said Friday.

The satellite, which can see through clouds and carry out day-and-night all-weather imaging, has been one of the long-standing demands of the Indian military, the NDTV news channel said.

The 300 kilogram (650 pound) RISAT 2 will be launched by India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle rocket in the next few weeks, the report said.

Indian scientists were in the process of integrating the satellite and the rocket at the Sriharikota space port in southern India, it said.

The acquisition was fast-tracked after the November 26-29 Mumbai siege in which 10 gunmen went on a shooting spree.

India says the attackers came by boat from the Pakistani port city of Karachi to Mumbai, based on its investigations and the confession of the lone gunman captured alive after the 60-hour siege, in which 165 people were killed.

India's existing satellites get blinded at night and in the monsoon season.

NDTV said the new acquisition would also provide New Delhi with the capability to track incoming hostile ballistic missiles.

India treated Israel like a pariah for decades, but has forged close military links with Tel Aviv in recent years with the Jewish state replacing France in 2007 as its second-largest arms supplier after Russia.

India turns to Israel to avert Mumbai replay?

Sat, 21 Mar 2009 01:32:51 GMT

India has purchased a high-precision reconnaissance satellite from Israel to beef up intelligence acquisition after the Mumbai terror attacks.

The radar-imaging satellite, which is now deployed in the Sriharikota spaceport in southern India, is to be launched by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in the first week of April, The Hindu reported on Thursday.

The orbiter, named RISAT 2, surpasses the currently operational Indian satellites in its capability to acquire images in all weathers and throughout the day.

New Delhi, which had already bought an Israeli satellite with comparable features, resolved on the purchase of a second one after last November's terror attacks on Mumbai. Ten militants, allegedly Pakistani nationals, attacked several sites across the financial hub during the calamitous incident.

Frequent warnings of the recurrence of the raids were also said to have fast-tracked the move.

New Delhi, which enjoys good defense cooperation with Israel, had also asked Tel Aviv to help launch retaliatory attacks inside Pakistan, Israeli website Debkafile said early last December.

Israel reportedly welcomed the move to avenge the murder of six Jews in Mumbai's Chabad center in November.

Israeli intelligence operatives' reputation for impeccable conduct of such missions had reportedly driven India to come up with such a request.

A3媒体也搞不清这课RISAT是A3从以色列买来的,还是以色列的

ISRO readies launch of another high-tech spy satellite

19 March 2009

Chennai: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is readying a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) to launch an Israeli RISAT (Radar Imaging Satellite), in the first week of April. Given its all-weather, day and night capability, the RISAT falls in the class of high-tech spy satellites and as of now there is some uncertainty about the end user ?if it should be Israel or India.

Reports suggest that the given the current security environment in the Indian sub-continent, the Indians may have acquired the RISAT from Israel for their use, as the indigenously developed version is slated for launch only at the end of the year, or even early next year.

The RISAT is a radar-imaging satellite used for remote-sensing, which can take pictures of the earth 24 hours of the day, through rain and cloud. It is not clear as to the size of the Israeli RISAT, which may be in the region of about 300 kg.  If so, the Indian RISAT would be approximately six times its size, at around 1780 kg.

Vehicle integration is moving apace at the spaceport at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

The launch vehicle, PSLV-C12, will also deploy a mini-satellite called Anusat, built by Anna University, Chennai. Anusat, an amateur communications satellite weighing 38 kg, was integrated at the Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai, of Anna University. It is undergoing tests at the ISRO Satellite Centre, Bangalore and is due to reach Sriharikota soon.

Last year, ISRO put into orbit the TecSAR spy satellite from Israel, which drew a howl of protest from Iran. This too was a radar-imaging, remote-sensing satellite and the launch was executed under a commercial contract between the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the Antrix Corporation, the commercial wing of the Government of India's Department of Space.

The PSLV due to take the RISAT and the Anusat into orbit will be a 'core alone' version ?that is it will be missing the six strap-on boosters, which are part of the standard PSLV.

Indian RISAT

The Indian RISAT will be the first satellite launched by India to operate in the microwave region. It will carry a multi-mode, agile, C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload operating in a multi-polarisation and multi-resolution mode. Remote sensing satellites launched previously by ISRO cannot carry out the operations of the type which can be undertaken by RISAT. Indian space scientists see the RISAT as a major milestone for the country as far as remote sensing satellites are concerned.

Apart from its military usefulness ?it can sense military build-ups taking place deep in the interior of a hostile country at any time of the day or night, in any weather condition, adverse or helpful. It will have immense uses in the civilian arena as well, particularly during the monsoon season.

India's high-tech intelligence-gathering assets are severely constrained as the planned Israeli Phalcon Airborne Early Warning and Control System systems are yet to be delivered.

India acquires Israeli spy satellite

Pallava Bagla
Thursday, March 19, 2009, (New Delhi)

India has acquired an Israeli satellite that has day and night viewing capability. A bird can keep a watch over India's hostile neighbours even when the landmass is covered by a thick cloud cover, this capability puts the satellite in the class of what are often called `spy satellites'.

The Indian security forces have been seeking such capability for a long time and the need to procure one quickly was precipitated after the Mumbai attacks. India's existing satellites get blinded at night and in the monsoon season. The satellite will also provide India the capability to track incoming hostile ballistic missiles.

In a few weeks this satellite called a Radar Satellite (RISAT-2) will be launched using the Indian rocket the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). The 300 kilogram satellite is the first of its kind for India and is in the process of being integrated with the Indian rocket at India's space port Sriharikota.

ISRO has been developing its very own RadarSat at a cost of almost Rs 400 crores but since that was taking time India went in for a hurried purchase from Israel. India's own RadarSat will launched later in 2009 which will give India a constellation of spy satellites.

Indo-Israeli relations in space are at a new high ever since in January 2008 India launched Israel's very own spy satellite called TecSAR it had a resolution of almost 10 centimetres, meaning it could read car number plates from the sky.

India's 1st Student-made Satellite Set for Launch

Techtree News Staff, Mar 23, 2009 1306 hrs IST

To take-off in April

Coming April, India's student community will get a big morale booster when the country's first student-made satellite will ride into space on the PSLV, (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) along with ISRO's (Indian Space Research Organization) Risat Satellite.

The "Anusat" has been designed by 37 aerospace engineering students with the help of 10 teachers from the Madras Institute of Technology. ISRO, which has been promoting the development of satellites (microsatellites), is finally seeing its efforts bearing fruit with the imminent launch of the Anusat. The idea behind the promotion was to make the students aware of the various factors involved in the design and launch of a satellite. These involved taking in to consideration the thermal management of the satellite, controls, the guidance system, power delivery, and not to mention, the communications part wherein the two-way communication between the satellite and the command centre will be managed.

The satellite will orbit the earth in a low altitude orbit between 600 and 800km. Data from the satellite will be received at the Chennai Tech University and the Pune University.

Anusat has been designed to cater the basic communication purposes. However, the main purpose behind the initiative, apart from the obvious scientific intent, was to give the students a "hands-on" experience in handling complex projects like the design, development and execution of a project of this nature. The program was initiated in 2002 and was ideated by R. Vasagam, the former vice chancellor of Anna University.

Other universities and educational institutions are already in the midst of developing micro satellites. These include the IIT Mumbaui and IIT Kanpur and not to mention, Anna University to which the Madras Institute of Technology is affiliated with.

The launch of the satellite is expected to happen on April 5 or 6.
